Question: Are there particular items that I am not allowed to bring to Russia?
Answer:

Yes, a list will be provided to you along with your plane ticket.

Question: How do I get additional money to spend?
Answer:

Obtain a DEBIT CARD from your bank. Do not depend on a credit card because the banking situation is unstable. Outside of Moscow, most merchants will not accept credit cards. However, you can get cash from the bank using a DEBIT CARD after 3 pm. Remember...DEBIT CARD!

Question: If I have the need for additional clothing for sledding, can I purchase it?
Answer:

Yes.

Question: Do I need to bring toilet paper with me?
Answer:

No. Russia is not a third world country. When we are going to be travelling through areas with limited facilities, we will let you know.

Question: What can you tell me about the weather?
Answer:

If you have been to the North Bay, Ontario area in January, you will know how to dress.

Question: If I don't want to sled all day, is there something else to do?
Answer:

Yes, you can take a sleigh ride through the village and go around the countryside or arrange for a sightseeing tour in Perm. The sauna is set on "well done" and the masseuse can be gentle or put you "on the rack." You decide.

Question: What type of sledding will we be doing?
Answer:

The trip is geared for experienced to slightly extreme. If you prefer more or less of a challenge, just let us know and we will divide the group accordingly.

Question: Why do the guides carry rifles?
Answer:

First, to scare off Moose and Elk males if it is close to mating season. Secondly, your dinner!

Question: Will we have an opportunity to interact with the local villagers?
Answer:

Yes and you will also have a private dinner with a local family. They don't speak English and you don't speak Russian. This experience is always fun! There will also be an opportunity to stop at the local orphanage where you will have a chance to give a child a ride on your sled. This is a real treat for them and we are working on a lunch arrangement with them.

Question: I have heard stories of the police or military "shaking down" tourists for money. Will this be a problem?
Answer:

Absolutely not. You may find the police joining us occasionally just to get to know us. The same can be said for the military. Remember, the Urals Region was closed to outsiders until 1993 and we are still an item of curiosity because of the Cold War myths.

Question: What is the situation with tipping?
Answer:

Tips are the same as in the states. At the conclusion of the tour, you will be given an envelope where you may tip the guides, drivers, and lodge staff as you feel is appropriate. Then money will be divided evenly.

Question: Will there be evening entertainment?
Answer: Yes, you will have opportunities to go out in the evenings except at the lodge. The location is remote so the entertainment will be brought to you.
Question: What kind of sleds will we be using?
Answer:

We use Tiger wide-track machines that are identical to the Ski Doo Skandic: one person to a machine.

Question: Is that like the dreaded Bouran Mono Ski?
Answer:

No relationship. There is a joke about the Bouran. Why does it take four Bourans to pull a disabled tank? One machine to pull and three for moral support. Don't underestimate this beast. You will have an opportunity to try one at the lodge.

Question: I have no experience in deep snow or using a wide track machine, will I have a problem?
Answer:

We will arrive at the lodge in time for lunch. Afterwards, there will be an orientation on the Tigers and you will be able to practice handling the machines in different situations.

 

Question: Is this going to be a carnival ride in circles or will we be able to get out and go?
Answer:

Our guides can lead or follow. The pace and distance of the trip is up to the group. The guides are there to assist you and make sure you return. Its your trip.

Question: What is the size of the group?
Answer:

We limit the group to twelve so you will have an easy vacation without the "Crowd Mentality."

Question: What will the accomodations be like?
Answer:

We use 3 and 4 star hotels with a private bath in each room. There will be two people per room unless other arrangements are made.

Question: What kind of food will we have and what about water?
Answer:

There will be very little fried food. The meals are basically vegetables and meats. That is why you will not see many overweight Russians. Our meals will be at the hotels except for lunches while on the tours. Bottled water, soda, wine, and vodka will be available for you daily. Do not drink the local water.

Question: Can I be contacted from home in case of an emergency?
Answer:

Yes, you will be given an email address and I check it every evening. If you feel the need to make a personal call, I can arrange it but it is very expensive. This is your vacation. relax and enjoy it.

Question: If I need to get home quickly, can it be done?
Answer:

Yes, but be prepared to pay for another plane ticket and ground transportation.

Question: If I am involved in an accident, how do I get treatment?
Answer:

No problem if it is in Moscow or Yekaterinburg. If you need emergency help at the lodge, Uralhelicom will evacuate you.

Question: Is it possible to rent a car and go sightseeing without the group?
Answer:

You can rent anything in Russia. Russian drivers don't steer their cars; they aim them so I would discourage this. If you feel it is necessary to get out on your own, I will arrange for a car and driver for you.

Question: Will there be opportunities for shopping?
Answer:

Yes, everywhere but do not buy antiques. If you are not sure, ask your guide.

Question: Are the guides bilingual?
Answer:

Yes and Da.

Question: Can I mail items home instead of carrying them?
Answer:

Yes

Question: Will I be able to use my cell phone?
Answer: No, they have a different system.
